German Language Learning from Kindergarten to A-Level (3-17/18)


Our school aims to develop the children's command of spoken and written German, and to further awareness and understanding of their German, Austrian, or Swiss cultural background.


Typically, our children have one German-speaking parent, or have grown up in a German-speaking country. Living in an English environment, it might become increasingly difficult to maintain fluency in their native language.


Our teachers, who come from German-speaking countries and enjoy working with children, aim to give them the confidence to communicate spontaneously and fluently, and to write with a sound knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.


All our lessons are held in German. The German Embassy and the Goethe-Institute offer their support in organizing our yearly teacher seminars and children's theatre performances.


We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) run by parent volunteers.



About us



The German Saturday School North London was started as a parent initiative to provide German learning and an appreciation of German, Swiss and Austrian culture and traditions for the children of bilingual and expatriate families from German-speaking countries.


The school has grown over the years and now has 110-120 children attending regularly on Saturday mornings. We are fortunate to have access to facilities at the Copthall School in Mill Hill. In 2011, the school was incorporated as a Community Interest Company (CIC), to better serve the interests of the German language community of North London and surrounding areas.


We remain a not-for-profit organisation dependent on the voluntary work of our parents for the administration of our school. Our teachers are qualified part-time employees and have DBS checks.



Volunteer Board



The school is run by a volunteer board of directors and a wider committee, made up of parents of children in the school. The current membership is as follows:

Community



Many parents contribute their time to other aspects of running the school, such as our end-of-term Christmas, Easter and Summer parties which are something the entire family loves to take part in.


We also have volunteers who run the school library of books, DVDs and videos, to which we receive regular donations. We hold an annual parents' meeting to involve the whole parent body in the direction of the school.


Parents can meet in the school canteen during lesson times for tea and coffee. Our diverse community of families spans across mixed backgrounds from many countries, whilst we all share an interest in learning German.



Vacancies



We are recruiting for paid positions of teachers, TAs and substitute teachers for this academic year. This is a great opportunity for German speaking students or parents/carers to contribute to our learning environment. You will be supported with classroom structure and learning materials when joining our team of teachers. Please contact us for role descriptions, our equal opportunities policy and further information. Minimum age for TAs is 16.


As per our safer recruitment policy, all applicants will undergo an enhanced DBS check.
